Barbara Karst Bougainvillea
The Bougainvillea variety ‘Barbara Karst’ is a marriage of toughness and beauty. Not only does ‘Barbara Karst’ handle desert heat well, it has been noted as hardy down to 25°F. Frost may nip the newer growth, but the lion’s share of the plant will be undisturbed. From spring, all the way through summer, the relatively inconspicuous blossoms of ‘Barbara Karst’ are surrounded by bracts of such a bright magenta-red color that they almost look unreal, though in light shade the bracts will take on a more earthly violet cast. Be sure to plant in full sun for the best show of color. Watch for the thorns when you prune this big boy; they’re infrequent, but enormous! Wearing puncture proof gloves is a very good idea. Plant this Bougainvillea where a large vine or hedge is desired, and just shape it over time until it takes the form you need.
